FAQs

Is acupuncture safe?

Acupuncture is an extremely safe therapy when practised by a trained therapist.  British Acupuncture Council Members have undertaken degree level training or equivalent and adhere to the British Acupuncture Council’s strict Codes of Safe Practice and Professional Conduct.

Are the needles reused?

No.  Only pre-sterilised, single-use needles are used which are disposed of safely after treatment.

Are there any side effects?

Sometimes a small bruise may appear when a needle is removed. Occasionally, people may feel dizzy or tired for a brief time after treatment. These side effects are mild and self-limiting.

It is best to stay hydrated and refrain from vigorous activity and alcohol for several hours after treatment.

What should I expect during treatment?

Your first treatment will involve taking a full case history so that a diagnosis can be made. In order to gather this information and carry out any physical examinations required, this treatment session will last an hour and a half. You will be asked about your current symptoms and any treatments that you may have already received for these or are currently undergoing. You will be asked about your medical history and other questions concerning your health such as how well you sleep, your diet and digestion, how you feel in yourself and what you would like to achieve from treatment.

Follow on sessions will last up to 1 hour and will involve the insertion of fine needles.  The acupuncture points used will have been carefully chosen to benefit your particular condition. Other techniques such as cupping, gua sha or electroacupuncture may also be used.

How many treatments will I need?

This will depend on the nature of your complaint and how you respond to treatment.  Usually, improvements are seen within 4-6 treatments.  Your progress will be reviewed at each session

How frequently should I come?

This will also depend on the nature of your complaint but usually I will see patients once a week. As symptoms improve, treatment may be required less frequently. Some patients may want to come back for a maintenance or preventative treatment seasonally.

Can I use acupuncture alongside conventional medical treatments?

Yes, acupuncture can work effectively alongside conventional western medicine.  In some cases it can alleviate the side effects of medications used to manage conditions.

Will my treatment be covered by my private health insurance?

Private health insurance policies are all different, so you will need to check with your particular policy. The British Acupuncture Council lists all private health insurers that offer some cover for acupuncture treatment.
